Finca de Angeles
is surrounded by Volcanoes both awake and asleep.

The altitude and rich soil produce bourbon coffee of unsurpassed quality.

Organic farming is all the Samayoa family has known for nearly 150 years.

Shaded primarily by banana and grown in rich volcanic soil Mother Nature has provided, they employ a unique standard during harvest.

Zero tolerance for unripe berries is that standard.

Typical industry standard is 6% unripe berries, however that is often exceeded.

Once the bean is dried it is virtually impossible to tell any difference, however the inconsistencies becomes apparent during roasting.

A significant imbalance in the aroma and flavor are the result.

With zero unripe berries prior to sun drying, the flavor once roasted is uniform and pure. This step is critical for top quality but the practice is in fact, rare and only done for private haciendas.

We will have roughly 18,000 kg from Finca de Angeles this season.

What I am currently selling was rewarded with 7th place in last year’s

‘Cup of Excellence’. This is very high quality coffee. Your local roaster simply will not pay for this type of quality because…they don’t need to.

I am attempting to change that attitude.

I believe that my customers have always recognized superior quality and are willing to pay for it.

Fortunately for them we are offering a far superior product that, in most cases cost considerably less per pound. How is that done?

As a fishmonger I happen to be a bonded importer.

Stephanie happens to own the farm.

We clear customs in Chicago and fly it in directly from Finca de Angeles.

There is a myriad of customs, transport, licensing, agents etc. that we do not employ because…we don’t need to. I am already bonded, licensed and insured and Stephanie has gone about procuring hers. I’m sure she is the only woman and indeed one of the few registered exporters in El Salvador outside of the established ‘company store’ giant that has been putting it to these folks for over a century.

What we need are customers.

“Fair trade boils down to 1.69 pound” this quote from one of the largest buyers of coffee in North America.

That is the price that the roasters pay from brokers.

The growers get more like .50 per lb.

Quite a mark up. And by the time it gets to retail it’s 14-22.00 per lb. and I have yet to taste one as rich and wonderful as Finca de Angeles.

She ( buyer) feels the same way I do about fair trade, which is not very fair at all.

I believe it to be a well researched marketing effort by an enormous global industry aimed at making people feel better about inexcusable practices and treatment in regards to the growers and laborers.

I liken it to USDA certified Organic labeling. A crock.

Finca de Angeles was reclaimed by Stephanie Andersen 5 years ago and is a work in progress. The Plantation was started by her great grandfather and declined to a state which allowed the jungle to take over allowing only subsistence production from the Campesinos until that time.

Stephanie has embarked on a total reclamation of its former production and is exceeding in that she planted Criollo Cacao four years ago and is coming into her first harvest this winter.

ALL of the profits go directly to Stephanie at Finca de Angeles who uses the proceeds to continuously enhance the nursery and production.

All of the families who work at the Finca have 1-2 acres provided them to grow their own crops which historically have been beans and maize, but now they are also growing heirloom vegetables guided by Stephanie who imported the seeds two years ago.

Stephanie labors alongside her people each and every day.

The standard pay is about 3.50 per day and we are looking to increase that substantially by cutting out the intermediaries.

We are also using the profits to produce indigenous packaging that can be used again and again and will employ the women in the area who traditionally work only during the short harvest season

Stephanie is an award winning textile and glass artisan who has embraced her cultural heritage to become a farmer.

I am the son of a master perfumer and recognize a nice scent!

The beans are flown in to Chicago green and roasted. We can roast the beans locally but I find the method of roasting in Tecapan to be better and more intuitive. We offer a medium as well as a darker roast.
